DISC Workshop for the St. Catherine's Kids

On Saturday last week we hosted 15 kids from St. Catherine's Childrens home which is located in a nearby slum. We shared with them from a behavior style survey called DISC.  Twyla was the teacher, Denise helped to organize and several ladies came to help the kids answer the questions and discover why they behave the way they do...it was such fun!
Twyla & Denise discussing strategy :)
Waiting for the workshop to begin

Bev, one of our helpers, handing out name tags
We asked the kids to complete a personal profile sheet of basic information
Denise handing out pens

Bev helping them complete the forms
Teacher Rachel (from St. Catherines) also helped
Gladys greeting the kids as she wipes the table for them :)
Gladys loves kids and I love watching her interact with them!
Prep time before the workshop included some explanation about the survey...
Denise introducing them to some animals they've never seen
The DISC profile survey compares us to 4 animals; Golden Retriever, Otter, Beaver and Lion - the lion was pretty much the only animal they were familiar with :)
Denise's friend Irene, who is a children's worker, joined us
Twyla starts the teaching by asking them to pair up to work together
American English is a challenge for people here to understand...so Bev agreed to help with translation...
Bev did a great job translating for the kids
Denise got a few shots too!
Twyla is an animated teacher and you can see that Bev is an animated interpreter!

Irene paying close attention to be able to help the kids...
We were pleased and felt blessed at the attention the kids displayed...they were so excited for this opportunity to learn about who they are and how they respond to life.

Praying or thinking?
We found that interaction between Twyla and the kids was helpful as they struggled to understand some of the concepts which were very American based...translating into Kenyan culture was a challenge!
Teacher Tom is also from St. Catherines...he and these two boys, Felix and John, concentrate seriously!

Teacher Rachel's little guy - what a cutie!
The survey has 8 section.  Each section has 4 pictures/descriptions of a behavior style. The kids needed to pick which of the 4 was most and least like them and rank them from 4 (most like them) to 1 (least like them)

Twyla, a frustrated actress, did a great job 'demonstrating' each behavior type...
Denise, who is in relationship with these kids, was vital in helping the kids to understand each section and each description...

Bev, who took the test herself with Denise's help, was a great help to the kids as they struggled to understand and apply the descriptions to themselves.

Zippy, head of our Compassion Ministry, took over the translating when she arrived.
Here she is at the table helping the kids...
You can see that Irene really captured their attention
Here is a good shot of Bev helping the girls with their surveys...

Twyla also used Zippy as an 'object lesson' several times :)

I think the power point helped since she used some different pictures than the survey showed...
Acting out what a leader looks like :)

Denise and Bev taking a short tea break

We discovered the word "aggressive" is considered bad when "Chop chop Sharon" as she is called rated herself very low in wanting to move fast when she is working.  The picture was of a motorbike trying to win a race...she ranked it as a 1 because she said it looked dangerous...Denise is helping her understand the true meaning of the description
Sharon listening intently to Twyla's explanation...
Time to tally the results from the 8 categories...She holds up the summary page
I loved watching the different ways the kids transferred the scores from the categories to the summary page...insight into their personalities and styles
We learned alot on this day...what works and what does not, buzz words that have a different meaning here than in the US, just how long this process actually takes!  We will spend time reviewing, refining and reworking this workshop as we anticipate a follow-up workshop.

We were especially blessed by the ladies who helped!  We know that it takes a team to make anything happen...
