"Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."

Tanzania Mission...

Okay - so I presented the team, but did not tell about the mission...that is unless I really did post an entry and have just forgotten that I did...hmmm...

Pastor William Makali and his wife Martha (shown below with the children) have a ministry in Tanzania in a village called Yulansoni near Singida. The preschool provides the children with the basics so that they are prepared to enter primary school. The ministry also includes a medical clinic, a school for Pastors and community outreach programs.

Years ago, Pastor Makali embarked on a long journey from his home in Tanzania to Southern California to attend the Robert Schuller Institute for Succesful Church Leadership. Since that time he made the trek three more times - to attend the School of Preaching and to visit his friends Harold and June Leach, members of the Early Bird Bible Study. The Early Birds have embraced William and met Martha just last year...and now that same group of people has 'adopted' our team and will be praying us through our mission.

Harold, who along with wife June, has hosted William each time he has visited will be making his first trip to Tanzania and William is excited to share his home with Harold.

The team will leave the US on May 28, arrive in TZ on May 30...make the loooong trek to Singida on Jun 1, work in the Preschool, on some construction projects, make bricks, visit orphanages and even plant some gardens along the way! We plan to spend one day on an excursion to the Ngorongoro Crater (which I hear is magnificent) and of course there will be time for shopping!

The others will board their plane on Jun 10 and arrive home on Jun 11, while I will make my way to Nairobi to continue on this Kingdom Journey - watch for more updates as I make connections and plans on 'this side' to visit and work with ministries on 'that side'...

Presenting the Tanzania Team...

Early Bird Bible Study (EBBS) Fellowship class has hosted Pastor Makali (the pastor we will be working with in Tanzania) several times over the past few years and supports his ministry financially. They have also made a commitment to my work in Kenya and invited our whole team to visit today...and gave me the whole class time! I thoroughly enjoyed teaching them again! But...I am getting ahead of myself!

First Pastor Muffin, Pastor of Global Community, introduced me by sharing with the class about missions at the Crystal Cathedral...during which time she expressed her support of me and assurance of the call of God on my life...and also how not-so-happy she is about my impending departure! We have worked very closely together since October 2005 (well except for the 6 months I was in Kenya, that is...)
In these next two shots, I am teaching on Spiritual Gifts. I shared with the class how each member of the body of Christ has individual and unique gifts, talents, abilities, and personalities; while being a part of the one body. I related each point to our team and how we will pull together with our individual strengths for the good of the team and mission.
I also stressed from 1Cor 12:12-26 that we are expected to care for and embrace even the weakest member of the body...and I realized that while I was teaching this class, and relating it to our team, I was also communicating to the team attributes that I trust will be evident as we work together on the mission field.
I called each member of the team forward - this is Harold. I talked about the strengths I see in each - Harold brings wisdom and a steadfast faith to the team. He has gifts of service and leadership...and he is the oldest member of the team!
Next oldest (yup - I went from oldest to youngest) was not present...that would be Gusti - she is a delight! Enthusiastic, ready smile all the time and an eagerness to help.

Then there is Alex - I say her middle name should be Adventurous because she is ready to go anywhere anytime! She is also generous, outgoing, playful and a great videographer...yea Alex. Okay - here is where I will say - yes, she's my mom...but - I have stated a "Rule of Engagement" to the team...starting NOW we are a team first and family second...so I purposely introduced Alex and Jim as team members - not family!
Alice is my champion...she has been a constant support to me for the past two plus years. Without her I would not have been successful these past many months...she is my assistant for the mission trip and has been an integral part of every aspect of the planning thus far. She is a hard worker, has great ideas, is a champion for the less fortunate...and - she is my friend.
Then there is Jim...last but certainly not least! He is the youngest (except for me!)...he loves people, is genuinely interested in others and absolutely has the gift of helps...
After the introductions I asked them to pull their chairs forward and invited members of the class to come forward to stand behind each of them...each person (including me) had at least two people pray for them...and then my friend Louise (who is head of my intercessory prayer team) prayed over the whole team...and we were 'commissioned'...
Here we are - the whole team sans Gusti...I gotta call that girl!
Left to right is Alice Miller, Alex Wilson, Joanna Kelley, Harold Leach and Jim Cassidy...good lookin' bunch doncha think?

The Old Lady Shower

We call it the Old Lady Shower because this is the one that all the old ladies in her life were invited to! Her Grandmothers, her Aunts, her Mom and her mom's friends! The invitations were pink - her favorite color...
Here is the board - the one game we play was to memorize what is on the board and then write down as many objects as we could...whoever remembers the most wins...of course, Amanda, being a law student and having to memorize volumes of material won the game...so she got the board! BUT my friend Brooke got second place - go Brooke! So she won a vase of flowers....
Here is Amanda's Aunt Kathryn and mom's (that would be me) friend Kathy playing the game...
Aunt Holly (hostess) tossing the salad - food looks yummy don't cha think? It was!
Left is mom's friend Janet, standing is Kathy (you saw her playing the game), sitting is Grandma Marge, Yaya (Grandma Alex) and Amanda
The two grandmas have been close friends since even before her dad and I were married. Marge on the left is his mom and Alex on the right is my mom.

Two cousins! This is Ashley (Holly's daughter) with Amanda surveying ALL the presents!
I gave her this key holder thing...it is pewter and I just liked it so I bought it!
Every bride has to have a good supply of Pyrex!
These were the HIT of the party - they are canisters with seal tight lids that have what I call a pop top - you press down and the vacuum seal releases and the top comes right off (I guess you had to be there to appreciate how cool these were!).
This is mom's friend Pastor Beverely Muffin trying to figure out just how this thing works... mom's friend Judy is watching...and helping? NOT!
Okay - here she has just opened a box of rocks...that look on her face is - hmmm...how do I get excited about this one...and what's coming next?
Now she is reacting to a picture of the chaise lounge she and Joel picked out at Crate and Barrel! They fell in the with the two piece set and put it on the registry so they could go back after the wedding and pick it up at 10% off...but her Uncle Paul (Kathryn's husband) sat down on it and decided right then "this is what we are getting her..."...yea Uncle Paul!
Pastor Muffin's signature shower gift is a tool kit - and this one was stocked! The only rule is - Joel does NOT get to use it...hands off Joel!
General consensus - bride and groom will wear matching Crate and Barrel sashes during the wedding rehearsal...here is Aunt Holly modeling for the camera!
At the end, mom's friend Kim (who organized this whole shindig) set up a very touching activity. We started with a pitcher full of water and an empty bowl. Each of us poured a bit of water into the bowl while saying a prayer or giving advice or telling Amanda something we felt she needed to hear - to encourage her and help her on this very important journey called "marriage"....
I was moved by the words, prayers and sentiments that were expressed around the room. Here you see mom's friend Linda sitting in the background and Kim holding the bowl for Yaya.
Right behind Aunt Holly is Brooke...remember she is mom's friend who one the game we played - if you look on the table you can see the vase of flowers...everyone was envious!
My advice? When you need to complain about Joel or vent - ONLY tell these things to a person who loves him...and I am one of those people.
This is scooter - who formerly lived with Grandma Marge and Grandpa Howard but was displaced when they moved into a retirement home...Judy is such a softie...and was the only one who could coax him out from under the table...
I must say - this was an amazing day and I do believe we all had lots of fun!

Her Second Wedding Shower!

Second of four! This is the first one I was invited to, since her first shower was with her Pepperdine friends - that one was given by her Pepperdine bridesmaid, Amy. This shower, held at Whimsical Teas in Fullerton was given by her two "church" bridesmaids. They will be introduced later in this entry. First i wanted you to see the invitation...cute!
This is the door to the tea house...we waited outside for a few
minutes while they were setting up for us...
Rachel, the official photographer snapped this shot of Amanda
with her cousin Ashley - two redheads!
Okay - meet Melissa and Chantel...our hostesses and two of Amanda's
bridesmaids. Oh, and we all wore hats...some Amanda brought, some Melissa brought and some were provided by Whimsical Teas.
Above, a table setting...below Amanda holds up her cup - I think there is a heart inside.
Each teapot was different

Above are Karen and Rachel (photographer) - below is lunch!
Amanda doing her second favorite activity...first is shopping!
Smart girl, she started with my present!
Having fun with Mr Frog and Mr Fish potholders!
More present opening...actually I included this photo cuz I am in it - see to the far left?
Rachel and Amanda - they have been friends since 3rd grade...her 'oldest' friend and (of course) one of her bridesmaids! She will give the 4th shower in May - one week before the wedding so that her sister, Katie (maid of honor) can attend...she is coming from Iowa.
I must say this was a fun party - there were 11 in attendance and we enjoyed 3 different teas, Jasmine, Peach Melba and Earl Gray...my favorite was Jasmine...scones and finger sandwiches.

Next shower is this Saturday - dubbed the "old lady shower" this one will be at her Aunt Holly's house for her mom's (that's me) friends, her aunts, her grandmothers and other old ladies in her life! I am excited cuz I have decided we will have a rousing game (or two or three) of Bocce Ball (Ashley's birthday present from Amanda and me)...oh boy!

Shepherd's Home Sanctuary for Children

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Rev MacMillan (Mac) and Nelly Kiiru, during their one month stay in the states. They are the founders of Shepherd's Home Sanctuary for Children which is located near Nairobi in Kenya. Mac is the visionary and I so enjoyed listening to how this vision was birthed years ago as he and his wife began to see so many children become orphans due to the AIDS epidemic and they just knew they had to do something. They now have two homes - one for girls and one for boys. Both locations also have a school through year 8, with plans to start a secondary school and so many other projects that I could not keep track! After Mac went upstairs to prepare for his weekend journey from CA to Indiana, I spent some time with Nelly learning about the day to day operations and looking at pictures of the children. Oh, the sparkle in her eyes as she recalled stories about each of the kids and shared with me her "rabbit" project for the boys and plans for other projects for the girls. When I asked if she was ready to return to her homeland, she said an immediate "YES"!
I lifted these photos from the Shepherd's Home website - here is the home for girls in Sigona...
A group of children - I believe this photo was taken in the Kibere slum, the previous location of their ministry...
I just love this photo of the children in the classroom - one thing I learned while in Kenya - the children do appreciate an education...even the young ones. Before we parted the three of us agreed to meet in Nairobi while I am there so that I can visit with them and see the homes (and the children!) first hand - I am so excited!

Update on the situation in Kenya...

This article is a bit lengthy, so read as much as you want and don't feel compelled to read it all - but it is a current update on the happenings in Kenya...and know that this is only part of the story...the "rest of the story" is that there are thousands in Kenya and, I am certain, hundreds of thousands all over the world praying for God's intervention in this situation. And, there are coalitions all over the nation of 'opposing' tribes choosing to unite in peace and refusing to be a part of the violence.

By Katie Nguyen and Daniel Wallis

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's opposition suspended talks with President Mwai Kibaki's party on Tuesday and police fired tear gas to scatter opposition supporters protesting against deepening deadlock over a power-sharing cabinet.

Kibaki and rival Raila Odinga delayed naming a cabinet on Monday after disagreeing over how to share out ministries and traded blame over who was responsible for the deadlock.

The cabinet is central to a deal on ending Kenya's post-election crisis.

Anyang' Nyong'o, secretary-general of Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement, or ODM, said talks would be suspended until Kibaki's party "fully recognizes the 50/50 power-sharing arrangement and the principle of portfolio balance."

Government spokesman Alfred Mutua condemned the walkout and accused ODM of playing games.

"They are the ones who do not want the coalition. How can they walk out of talks and make demands? Demands are made at the negotiating table," he said.

Nairobi's sprawling Kibera slum was convulsed by the biggest protests since both sides signed a power-sharing deal in February to end turmoil that killed at least 1,200 people after Kibaki's disputed re-election in December.

In a sign of mounting international concern, development partners including Britain, the United States, the World Bank and the United Nations said genuine power sharing was required to restore Kenyans' faith in the government.

"For the sake of Kenya we thus strongly urge the parties to agree very quickly on the formation of a coalition government," the group said in a statement.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she urged Kibaki and Odinga by telephone on Monday to reach a deal.

"Both emphasized to me their strong commitment to do so," Rice said in a statement on Tuesday. "It is imperative that they form the cabinet without further delay and address the vitally important work of the nation."

"ROUGH RIDE"

Residents in Kibera said youths looted shops and burned tires. Some ripped up railway lines connecting the Kenyan port of Mombasa, the region's largest, with Uganda.

Protests spread to the western opposition stronghold of Kisumu, where police closed in on angry crowds. "They're saying 'No cabinet, no peace,'" one witness said by telephone.

The shilling currency fell around 4 percent, its biggest one day fall since January 2, at the height of the violence.

"These politics can do real harm to our economy," said Friday Mwafuga, head of trading at Cooperative Bank. "Until this problem is solved, we are in for a rough ride ahead."

Kenya, East Africa's biggest economy and an important regional trade, transport and tourism hub, suffered heavily from the post-election riots and ethnic violence -- the worst turmoil since independence in 1963.

Nyong'o said the opposition was demanding a partial cabinet already named by Kibaki be dissolved before any more talks took place. He said the opposition would no longer respect an earlier agreement to a 40-member cabinet and wanted it to have 34 posts.

But some analysts believe that while Odinga's party is clearly stepping up the pressure to get what it wants, it has little room for maneuver

"They can accept the offices offered, withdraw from the coalition or resort to mass action," said Kenyan political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi.

If they withdrew that would hand all power back to Kibaki, he said, but "mass action does not make sense at this time" because of the bloodshed it provoked in January.

Most of the recent disagreement centers on a handful of ministries that Odinga, the prime minister-designate, says Kibaki's Party of National Unity had promised to give up.

PNU denies that, and Kibaki said on Monday he was ready to conclude the process of forming the cabinet as soon as possible.

One post not in dispute is finance, which means Finance Minister Amos Kimunya is almost certain to keep his job.

The Wedding Venue!

Well, I have finally visited the Centennial Heritage Museum. That is the location my daughter, Amanda and her fiance Joel have chosen for their wedding, which will take place on Friday May 23 - ah, is that less than two months from now!?
Two shots of the Kellogg House. They will be married on the steps right in front.
Here is a pretty good view of the seating area - see the fountain? The guests will be seated on the brick around the fountain and on the grassy area on either side...
My friend Kim, also the wedding coordinator, is standing where we envision the Pastor will stand (that would be the very reverend Howard Kelley AKA Amanda's grandpa!)
And here is where the bride will be...although Kim, Amanda's Aunt Kathryn and I spent some time discussing all of the possible options...but - the final decision is up to Amanda and Joel (of course!)
Here is a shot from the 'Pastor's Perspective'...
After the ceremony guests will walk through this trellised area...very serene. That is Kim to the left and Kathryn to the right.

This is a shot of the area where food, drinks and the DJ will be...
Kathryn is posing on the spot where the buffet tables will be placed...
And the location for the sweetheart table...Kathryn has some very special plans for decorating this area...

I had much fun walking the grounds and imagining all the people, all the decorations, the handsome groom and, best of all, the beautiful bride!
