See below for their list of services, ranging from eye exams to hearing tests to an eye bank to kidney dialysis! All the services are offered at low or no cost for those who live in poverty. But they also have a "Robin Hood wing" which is where the rich are treated and pay enough so that, along with generous donations from around the world, this facility is able to give excellent service to the most needy.
Recently Lions Eye Hospital participated in a medical camp sponsored by Starfish Charities (ministry of Rhonda, my roommate) and tested the eyes of hundreds of Maasai men, women and children. Three of the women were transported to the hospital to receive free cataract surgery! I was touched immensely as I know first hand how profoundly this procedure affects a person's vision.Meet left to right; Nepapa, Esther and Lokuso. They left home, family and responsibilities on Thursday the 10th of December and were taken back home on Sunday the 13th. We visited them on Saturday just one day after surgery.
Here is Rhonda with the 3 ladies. They were excited to see us and although they are sharing the room with many others, they were happy with the treatment they received.
Rhonda arranged for transport on Sunday morning...here are Nepapa and Esther as they are being dropped off to be taken home by family who have been anxiously awaiting their arrival.
And Lukuso...we have since learned that these ladies have taken the bandages off and are eagerly sharing with family and friends of their new clear vision. Two of them will return in January to have the other eye done.
I am constantly amazed when I find people like the ones at Lions Eye Hospital, who are committed to providing quality health care and other valuable services to the most needy here in Kenya - God is truly at work in this country...opening spiritual as well as physical eyes.
