"Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."

Visit to Susan's

One of our goals during our recent trip up country was to visit Denise's sister-in-law Susan.  As we set out we noticed rain clouds so decided we had better be prepared...good thing Denise brought her gum boots!
Tom was very sweet with my mom, and never left her side
First we walked for about 20 minutes along this dirt road to get to the main road...
Looking at (and photographing) the sights along the way...
Denise pointing to a pulley
This is what she wanted to use for the well which was dug on the property...

While waiting on the main road for a bus we noticed this gold mining camp...
Here you can see the camp is nestled in a lush valley - unfortunately this river will soon be polluted with mercury and other materials used during the mining process...
After a bus ride, a piki piki (motorbike) ride and a short walk we arrived at Susan's place.  She has a posho mill (for grinding grain) on her property...the white specs are bits of maize meal!

To the right of the boy you see the maize going in...
And it comes out as meal
Just to the right of the house all the way down you can see some green bushes...that is where Susan's old outhouse was in 2007, the last time I visited...that time when I tried to use the toilet a cow was there.  When I tried to move the cow it came towards me...one of the boys that was there rescued me with a stick...on this trip I discovered that little boy was Tom!  I guess he has always been one who takes care of others!

A shot of Susan's house and property...beautiful!

Quite a spread...Chapaties, beans, and cabbage here..

Chicken, beef stew and fruit here

Mom taking a picture of the food...

Local women came to visit while we were there - they are all family members
L to R: Roselida Akello with Ephraim Ochieng on her lap, Dorothy Akinyi, Evelyne Ooko, Audrey Akoth, Judith Achieng, Martha Anyango, Susan Adhiambo (see her below!)
Two are sister's in law, two are nieces and the lady on the ground is Susan's mother-in-law.

Mom and Roselida became fast friends :)

Feet!  I think Roselida has never worn shoes...
I love this shot of Tom with the two little ones...washing their hands
Charles is Susan's brother-in-law (her husband died several years ago) and this is his wife Mary
Since all of Charles' brothers have died (he had 4) he is left to care for the families they left behind.  That means he must find funds to pay school fees so that his nieces and nephews can get an education.  Since the oldest children have first priority, there is no money left for his youngest child Beatrice to be able to attend High School.

Here is Beatrice, Charles and Mary's last born.  Susan asked me some time ago to help with this girl's fees.  Once I discovered she was a good girl and a hard worker, I felt God was prompting me to help.  What a thrill it was for me to finally meet her!
Me, Mary (Min Beatrice), and Beatrice
After a lovely day the rain clouds began to threaten so we quickly found a piki piki for Mom (and of course Tom never left her side!)
Whoa - don't hit the cow!
There she goes!
Walking to the road to get our piki piki we passed Tabitha's house so I had to shoot this picture!

Tabitha's house - you will see her in the Kisumu blog post!
What a great day we had; visiting with good people, eating good food and having good fun!  From here Denise and I shared a piki piki all the way back home...and we beat the rain!  God is good :)
