This week the kids learned all about "The Integrity of a Servant"...but first - they all signed in!
Each week, the book is passed round so that we know who attends each week...

Of course every session opens in prayer...
Then each child read one or two verses from Gen 39:1-6 and 20-23

The 'scene' opens with Joseph being sold to Potiphar, captain of the guard. Then in Gen 39:20-23 we learn that he is then thrown into prison after being unjustly accused by Potiphar's wife.

The first discussion question had to do with the internal and external changes that Joseph faced...

The kids put themselves in Joseph's place and came up with some great answers: they would feel angry, they would be eating different food, have different friends and in prison they would face harsh treatment...NOT PLEASANT!

We then looked at the two passages to see what they had in common...
In both cases Joseph enjoyed God's favor and found favor with men; with Potiphar and with the prison guard...

Denise then asked the kids what traits Potiphar and the prison guard might have seen in Joseph that would make him stand out...

We agreed that Joseph was probably more pleasant than the other servants/prisoners, that he displayed a grateful attitude, he took care of others and he was faithful to God.

She then asked the kids if they had served a classmate that day.
Several of the kids were able to share about very kind things they had done to help each other...

The kids were really challenged when she asked them to imagine serving someone they don't even like, in the same ways they had shown kindness to fellow classmates...
That illustration really helped the kids to appreciate the character that Joseph displayed.
In the meantime Jacintah has "stolen" Rogers' pen and is here playing with it - to taunt him?
She has now given him a different pen to replace the one she took...he doesn't look like he is too concerned!
Denise then asked the kids to think about how they act within their own community - what would make other people look at your life and say "the Lord is with him or her"?
She enjoyed hearing all the answers, most of which were related to how good their lives are now in spite of their humble and even traumatic pasts.
We then asked how being in a "pit" (unpleasant/challenging circumstances) can affect our willingness to serve...
That really made them think and I believe they were challenged to see Joseph as a significant role model for their lives.

I had such fun helping Denise last Saturday and even got my hair braided by Miriam! I hope I was not too much of a distraction!
